WHAT IS WORLD BOOK DAY
World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and – most importantly it’s a celebration of reading. It’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.
The main aim of is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.
WHEN IT IS CELEBRATED
This year it falls on Thursday, March 3 but in other countries World Book Day is celebrated on April 23 – William Shakespeare’s birthday.
In the UK and Ireland, World Book Day is on the first Thursday of March. According to organizers, this date came about after serious thought and lengthy discussion to take into consideration religious holidays, school terms and potential conflict with other charitable activities.
WHO CAN TAKE PART
Everyone who loves books can take part in World Book Day. It is dedicated to getting children closer to the books and authors they already love – and helping them discover brand new books and authors they’ll love just as much.
