An amusement park in Japan froze 5,000 sea creatures into the floor of an ice rink to make it a centre of attraction. They thought it to be unique. But sadly they are forced to close the attraction on Sunday after public backlash after the torrent of online criticism over it’s centre piece. The authority thought that it can be a visitor’s attraction. Space World in the city of Kitakyushu, south-west Japan, bowed to pressure to close the facility on Sunday after an online campaign denouncing the piscine graveyard as “cruel”, “immoral” and “weird”. Fish, crabs and other shellfish were embedded in the ice as part of a special winter attraction, called “Freezing Port,” at Japan’s Space World theme park.
This skating rink in Southwestern Japan opened on November 12, after 5,000 fish were frozen under the surface of the ice as a decorative effect while customers skated above. But the concept was slammed as unethical and the rink in the city of Kitakyushu was forced to close on Sunday, Space World spokesman Koji Shibata said. The fish were also used to spell out “hello” under the ice and to form an arrow showing skaters which direction to follow.
The park advertised it as a “world first” and posted images of the fish on its official Facebook site with captions including “I am d… d… drowning, s … s… suffocating.” The rink, which was supposed to have stayed open until the spring, featured about 5,000 dead sprats, mackerel and other fish that had been bought from a local market embedded in the ice, some with their mouths still open in apparent suspended animation, according to local media reports.
Shibata said the fish were all already dead at the time of purchase and were considered unfit to be sold in markets. After the news of “Freezing Port” attraction broke on Sunday, the responses on social media have been claiming that the authority have no soul. Space World’s Facebook page was inundated with complaints and calls for the attraction to close.
On Sunday, the park announced it was closing the ice rink. “We deeply apologise to people who felt uncomfortable about the Ice Aquarium event,” it said in a statement quoted in the Japan Times. “As a result, we have stopped the event from today.”
