Angelique Kerber wins the us open championship beating Pliskova
Germany’s Angelique Kerber performed to her all new world number 1 player in the world and defeated the 10th-seeded Karolina Pliskova, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, in the Open final on Saturday.
But the second-seeded German fought back, showing the finishing kick of a champion in winning 24 of the last 34 points, and breaking Pliskova twice to seal a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory for her first US Open championship . She added the US Open crown to the Australian Open title she claimed in January, breaking Pliskova at love to cap the triumph.
“All my dreams came true today and I’m just trying to enjoy the moment,” said Kerber.”It’s incredible. I’m standing here with a second Grand Slam trophy and it means so much to me.”
“It all started for me here in New York five years ago when I reached the semi-finals and now I am here with the trophy,” she added. “It’s incredible.”
“To be number one and win Grand Slam titles was always my dream ever since I was a little girl,” Kerber said. “It means so much.”
Kerber will be the oldest player in the history of the WTA rankings to become No. 1 for the first time. She is the first German woman to win the United States Open since Steffi Graf, Kerber’s childhood idol and occasional mentor, in 1996.
