Imaginary performance appraisal of nation on wishful factors
Akanksha Tyagi
We have the word “management” attached to almost everything, as basic as “relationship”, “life”, “home” and “family”. On this 70th Independence Day, a citizen is wracking her brain and trying to find answers – if this can be done in terms of a nation! The country, like the world is not unfamiliar with the ways of the corporate. Why cannot we try to have the nation’s performance appraisal on the same lines! The only difference being the parameter is inclusive and accountable.
National wrap-up
News in print go overboard on New Year Eve (sometimes much before too!) and fill the readers up with annual wrap-up stories, features and advertorials. Our national days can be used to collate information, news, surveys, reports (which are public documents) and other features which could be targeted for different age-groups to talk about overall status on important issues of the nation. These could be about science and technology, education, research and development, food and agriculture, civic facilities and infrastructure in rural and urban areas, IT, defense and security; and many more.
The four pillars
The four pillars of our democracy – judiciary, legislative, executive and the press are strong and important topics for the citizens to be aware of. This day can be important not to blame but keep and share an account of their highs and lows, successes and failures, development, leadership, initiatives, impacts, reforms, trainings and education.
The Preamble
Analyzing last year’s national happenings on the content of the Preamble could be another parameter. The points to ponder upon – how fair were we, did we adhere to the mentioned phrases of the preamble, why were the loopholes, what were the challenges to not to adhere to them, how can they be overcome, how to bring in execution, and monitoring and accountability plan for the execution, performance review plan for the 71st Independence day.
Revenue and expenditure
These must be put up on the government websites. However we would agree how many of us surf those user-unfriendly websites and get the updates, though internet is on our palms and fingertips! Newspapers and news websites are easier to access and read, especially on a day which many would reserve to read, write, listen to or watch about the nation or independence (freedom and liberation too!). Revenue and expenditure of the nation in a gist like what incurred maximum expenditure, which revenue was fruitful and how, which were unimportant expenses, which sector was left out, where could be the next important expense aimed at etc.
The basic necessities, including security
After 70 years we still lack provision of basics in many places of the country. Sharing of detailed plan about the basics – food and agriculture, housing – urban and rural, education in urban areas as well as remote areas, medical facilities in the remotest areas, safety and security; and underprivileged, marginalised and minority’s rights against the inland agencies like police, law, politicians and administrators may become the beginning to look within.
Awareness may lead to conscious citizens. Well-informed nationals may lead to an independent nation. Or closer to being independent!
