In society woman’s role traditionally had been of child bearing and home making. Marriage was her primary goal and motherhood was her primary role.

Higher education facilitated woman’s entry into gainful employment. Today, it has become an acceptable social reality that woman would work outside the home. The concept of employment of woman has assumed a dominant role in the economic structure of the world, because prosperity of a country depends on the harmonious progress of both genders.

Women take up jobs outside home for various reasons. Some join profession to kill boredom while others do so due to permanent or temporary loss like sudden death of father or husband. Women are also working outside homes to utilize their potentiality in addition to fulfilling function as wife & mother. Other reason for taking up a career is that the education opportunities for females have given them the confidence and motivation to venture outside their homes. Some have been found to take jobs outside, because they find their homemaking task dull and rewarding. While others take employment for fruitful use of their spare time. Most of the women today originally plan to be career women because the women today are enlightened generations who have gradually realized that they have personalities of their own as human beings that their mission in life just does not end with becoming good wives and wise mothers. They have much more to contribute to the society, so they take up a profession or career for their choice.

By and large today’s woman knows her potential and takes employment to be economically independent, and want to contribute in economic development of her family.

There are problems arising from the women’s working status. The working women herself is confused regarding her numerous roles of a wife, mother and a worker in work place. The attitude of her husband and society is ambivalent. She wants to be respected as a sincere and efficient worker but her domestic roles put a hurdle in her career aspirations, because her husband expects her to be obedient and submissive wife and children expect her to be around all the time to meet their every major as well as the minor demands.

An employed married woman holds greater responsibility within a family as well as at the work place. She has to fulfill the role of wife, mother, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law and sister within the family and an employee, subordinate, superior, colleague, and friend at the work place. She has to do so many roles adjustments.

The point to be considered here is whether there is any basis conflict between the role of women as a mother and wife and that as working woman and whether effective handling of one can be done only at the cost of the other. To create a harmonious balance between the two, that is the job and at the home, allocation of time and resources has to be based on the priority of one role over the other at a given period.

Generally married working women are involved simultaneously in plural systems of relationship with the family and the society at large. Since these systems or roles often involve inconsistent or conflicting situations successfully, thus deriving a feeling of satisfaction from the various roles fulfillments.

Dual roles in family and workplace often make women tense. They perform family responsibilities and job at the expense of their physical and psychological health. Sharing daily household chores between working couples is not popular yet. Women, who are career oriented, put more emphasis on job and their role as mother and wife may be impaired, which create tension in the family. On the other hand if a woman who is more inclined towards the family and children, neglects her job, and is absent most of the time, therefore, fails to do justice with her job. In both the cases, the women are stressed. Such women are more susceptible to coronary heart disease, and other stress related disorders.

The effect of women’s employment on children can be both beneficial as well as harmful, depending on how the family perceives and responds to it. There are a number of benefits of a mother’s employment, the most important being economic. Secondly, a working woman is more organized. She manages home as well as her job more efficiently because she learns to manage her time well. The undesirable effect of women’s employment arises only when she cannot cope up with the pressure of work at both fronts and the children get neglected. This can easily be avoided by creating harmonious blending of home and workplace responsibilities and giving thoughtful attention to the priorities of each area. This will be possible if the whole family i.e. in-laws, husband and children support her.

Women’s employment has become a very common and highly encouraged phenomenon in today’s society. It has become an acceptable social reality that women would work outside the home. A working woman must maintain a healthy relationship both at home and at work place. What need to be done is to redesign the roles re-education or skill training. There has to be harmonious blending of a women’s role as a mother, wife and her career. The family plays a key role in influencing the duties of the women at work as well as at home. Cooperation of the family will help to overcome a major hurdle.
