Beijing, China displayed first-ever unmanned combat helicopter AV500W to enlarge its networking scope among military drones abroad.

Aviation Industry Corp of China (AVIC), an aircraft manufacturer displayed the reconnaissance cum combat helicopter at the fourth expo of china’s helicopter, one of the biggest of its kind in China.

AV500W will be useful for counterterrorism operations, Patrols and low-intensity conflicts.

With a maximum take-off capacity of 450 kilogram’s and a maximum speed of 170 kilometers per hour, this 7.2 – meter long aircraft which needs no driver to show direction is produced and developed at AVIC Helicopter Research and Development Institute in Jingdezhen according to State Run China daily reports.

With adaptability of both the features i.e. helicopter can be used for both reconnaissance purpose as well as combat use, former one aloft the craft for almost 8 hours on the run and later one can drive it for 4 hours.

The helicopter is able to carry off 12 kilograms of weapons.

Experts were quoted as saying that among all the Drones China ever offered to military have been always fixed wing models, AV500W is first ever unmanned military helicopter available in that market.

Jiang Taiyu, one of the chief designers of AV500W, said the aircraft fired weapons during its maiden flight test in August.

“The helicopter is able to take off and land on almost any landform including plateaus and canyons. It can operate in cold and tropical environments. It will be useful in border patrols, counterterrorism operations, and low-intensity conflicts because it can carry out very-low-altitude penetration and keep hovering for a while,” he said.

Jiang said that all of the helicopter’s tests will be finished before the end of this year and it will be ready for mass-production in 2018.

“Several nations have told us that they are interested in this aircraft. This is because there are a very small number of unmanned helicopters in the world that can perform strikes, while demand for such types is not small,” Jiang said.

He said only the US and Israel have developed unmanned armed helicopters such as the Northrop Grumman MQ-8B Fire Scout in the US.
Speaking about AV500W, it can carry the bomb and machine gun pods. It typically carries 4 – air to ground missiles which are equipped with radar homing technology for guidance. Each missile weighs 8 kilograms and can hit target 5 kilometers away, AVIC official quoted.

The AV500W’s target market will be countries dealing with terrorism such as in the Middle East, Jiang said.

Fang Yonghong, director of unmanned aircraft technology at AVIC Helicopter Research and Development Institute, said many nations in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East face huge pressure to ramp up their counterterrorism efforts and need good, affordable equipment such as the AV500W.
