I am sure we all have thought of walking on water, but it is quite impossible. Walking on water is just possible in movies and magic tricks only but what if I tell you that there is a place on this earth where you can literary walk on water. Yes you read it right. The ’Floating Piers’, on the surface of Lake Iseo in northern Italy allow people to take a walk on water. The path has been built according to the design of artists Christo Yavashev and Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon.
Last summer we saw an artist’s dreams recognized as Christo was given the go ahead to carry out a project he had been planning since 1970. The idea was the product of two artists, however Christo’s partner, Jeanne-Claude passed away in 2012, and was never able to see the project completed. Finally, last year, Christo and his team were able to begin setting up the Floating Piers on Lake Iseo in Italy.
The ’Floating Piers’ installation is made from plastic cubes that allow an individual to walk without any problem across the surface of the water. The path is 5.5km long and connects a village with two islands. The Floating Piers was a highly anticipated piece and became a hot topic worldwide. The project was an incredible success and drew in over a million tourists throughout the 16 day exhibiton.
Closing
On July 3, 2016, the work closed to the public; local officials estimated that it had attracted 1.2 million visitors, or an average of 72,000 per day, over its 16-day run. Police estimates were even higher, at 100,000 visitors per day. Dismantling of the project began in the early morning of July 4, 2016.
