Know All About The Longest Tunnel Of India “Chenani Nashri”
National Highway 44 is the only road which connects the Kashmir state to the rest states of the country. It is often closed due to snowfall, rainfall and landslides in winter season. And when it’s open in days, one side is the only way to stop the canals on the winding road.
To give some relief to thousands of passengers in northern state of Jammu and Kashmir, a new tunnel on the highway “Chenani-Nashri” tunnel may soon be able to cut the travel time more than two hours. The 10.89 km long tunnel in Jammu and Kashmir connects Udhampur with Ramban district.
On April 2, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a public rally in Udhampur district after dedicating ‘Nashri Tunnel’ India’s longest road-tunnel, to the nation. The tunnel built on the Jammu-Srinagar National highway. “A massive public rally will be addressed by the Prime Minister at Udhampur on April 2,” BJP MLA, Sat Sharma told reporters.
“The BJP has planned to organize a massive public rally to celebrate the historic moment of the inauguration of the tunnel,” Sharma said. The ‘Nashri Tunnel’ in Chennai, falling in the Udhampur district, will lessen the travel time between the two state capitals-Jammu and Srinagar-by two –and-a-half hours and prove to be of great importance to the state, he said.
About the ‘Chenani Nashri’ Tunnel
- Built at a cost of Rs. 2,519 crore, the tunnel consist of 9.35 metre wide with 5 metre vertical clearance. The tunnel is located at an elevation of 1,200 metres, and it is the first tunnel in the country to be equipped with world-class “integrated tunnel control system”.
- There is a parallel escape along with the main tunnel for any emergencies. It has 29 cross passages at every 300 metres connecting with two tubes. It has ventilation, fire control, signals, communication and electrical systems.
- The 10.89 km long tunnel project in Jammu and Kashmir connects Udhampur with Ramban district. The new tunnel is saving around Rs.27 lakh of fuel every day. Also it has traffic control systems in both north and south side. The project of this tunnel will be handed over to National Highway Authority of India by IL & FS soon after the inauguration.
- The tunnel has CCTV cameras, air vents softwares. “The formal trial run was successfully completed for peak, off peak hours between March 9 and March 15,” Project Director, IL&FS, J S Rathore said. Once the tunnel become operational, it will reduce traffic jams on National Highways-1 A that occurs due to snowfall and avalanches in winter at Patnitop, he said.
- The ‘Chenani Nashri’ tunnel is scheduled to be completed by May 21,2016. But due to the disturbance in the valley it was postponed to September 25. Due to landslides and snowfalls in Ramban district the opening was again delayed.
