Neil Armstrong’s Bag Which Had SamplesCan you believe it? The bag that was used by US astronaut Neil Armstrong to carry the moon dust back to earth was sold on a bid for $1.8 million. The auction took place on Thursday in New York on the 48th anniversary of 1st moon landing. The 12-inch by 8.5-inch bag labeled “Lunar Sample Return” was unidentified for decades. It got disappeared from Johnson centre, Max Ary manager of a Kansas museum was alleged for its theft in 2014.

This is the 5th time it’s been in an auction, three times without a bidder, and 4th time when a Chicago-area attorney, Nancy Lee Carlson bought it and sent it to NASA for authentication, NASA decided to keep it. When Carlson legally challenged NASA to return the bag, the controversy brought up many new buying enquiries for the bag and so this 5th auction took place.

“The bag belongs in a museum, so the entire world can share in and celebrate the universal human achievement it represents,” said Michelle Hanlon co-founder of For All Moonkind, a non-profit group which criticized this auction decision about selling space history pieces.
