This is a dream come true for those who love trains! As someone who has travelled extensively on trains, I can vouch for the fact that trains are the coolest way of travelling. Being a train lover is nothing new. People fancy travelling to unnamed stations on deserted express trains. If you love travelling by trains and dreamt of living inside a coach, then you’re one step away from your dream. Indian Railways (IR) will be auctioning old railway coaches soon and you can buy .
According to a Business Insider report, we hear, six metre-gauge trains have been pulled out of operation by the Lucknow division of the North Eastern Railway (NER) due to gauge conversion. They’ll go on sale as soon as the NER committee declares them as ‘condemned’. Turn them into a fancy restaurant, your personal library, or the home you always wanted to have, as these coaches may soon be yours.
Lucknow division has 12 metre-gauge rakes (trains) running on the Pilibhit-Mailani-Bah raich stretch and Pilibhit-Shahjahanpur stretch. The plan is to first ask each division of railways if they have any need of the metre gauge coaches. Western Railway might be in need of a few for their metre gauge section. The next procedure is to get the coaches checked by coach manufacturing units, if they can recycle any parts. If all these measures don’t succeed, North Eastern Railway would eventually auction them as scrap, which is when you can get one for you. Also the gradual phasing out of currently operation ICF coaches that are fitted to normal passenger and a few express trains would also result in ‘condemned’ coaches.
There is a bidding process one has to go through and can buy it through IR’s scrap sale. The cost of a coach would depend on the tonnes of iron it has. Some coaches would be used to augment the running ones, while some would be sent to workshops to remove essential parts for reuse. Whatever is left after that will be put on sale and if there are no takers, then there would be advertised and auctioned.
Scrap dealers who buy these coaches in general dismantle them and resell the iron. However you can buy the coaches from these dealers as well. The price of coaches is based on how much iron it contains. For the last coach of metre gauge track sold by the Lucknow division some 30 years backs was Rs 1,10,000.
