The stars of Australian cricket and their partners descended on Sydney’s The Star on Monday night for 2017 Allan Border awards and the red ohh mean the blue carpet was not less than an Oscar red carpet as the cricketing stars entered the event with their partners. From plunging necklines to cutout fabrics and a wash of pale and metallic colours, the predominant trends of the evening were all-white, sequins and the odd pop of bright colour.
But the star of the night was David Warner who became just the fourth player to win back-to-back Allan Border Medals, Australian cricket’s greatest individual honour. Only Ricky Ponting (2006, 2007), Shane Watson (2010, 2011) and Michael Clarke (2012, 2013) have previously won consecutive medals in Australian cricket’s prestigious annual awards.
The 30-year-old Warner recorded 269 votes over 248 for Steven Smith and 197 for fast bowler Mitchell Starc. The Australian vice-captain also bagged the ODI award, while Starc was crowned Test player of the year and Shane Watson named the country’s best in the Twenty20 format.
