The name of Meghalaya is derived from Sanskrit and it means “The Abode Of Clouds”. The area of Meghalaya covers approx 22,430 square kilometers. It is a state in north-east India. The capital is Shillong, known as the “Scotland of the East”. Meghalaya have rainy weather. It is the wettest place on earth. It is known for its highlands, fog and scenery. Meghalaya forests have a vast variety of flora and fauna. It has 2 National Parks and 3 Wildlife Sanctuaries.
Meghalaya have many adventures for tourists like Mountaineering, Rock Climbing, trekking and Hiking, Caving, Water Sports. Trekking routes can make you get a glance of rare animals. Also in north-east Cherrapunji is one of the popular tourist locations where you could get to see Tree Root Bridges.
Many waterfalls in Meghalaya are worth taking a look at least once in life. Some of them are elephant Falls, Shadthum Falls, Weinia falls, Bishop Falls, Nohkalikai Falls, Langshiang Falls and Sweet Falls. There is also Aisa’s second biggest river Island in Meghalaya.
There are many manmade and natural lakes in Meghalaya. The most popular and tourist attracted lake is Umiam Lake also known as Bara Pani means Big water on the Guwahati-Shillong road. It also have several parks, like Botanical Garden and Lady Hydari Park, Thangkharang Park.
Dawki is a place which is located at about 96 kilometers from Shillong gateway to Bangladesh from where you could get to see a scenic view of some of tallest mountain ranges in Meghalaya and Bangladesh borders.
