Rio 2016: Saina Nehwal, Sania Mirza Wins, Shiva Thapa ,Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi Exit
Day six of the Rio Olympics came as a mixed taste for India. While positive news came from tennis and badminton as Saina Nehwal, P V Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth made a resounding start to their campaign, and won their matches respectively.
Saina beated Brazilian Vicente Lohaynny, 21-17 21-17 in a match that lasted 39 minutes; while two-time World Championship bronze medallist, Sindhu, outplayed World no 64 Laura Sarosi of Hungary 21-8 21-9 in just 27 minutes.
But on the other hand Indian ace duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa and the men’s doubles pair of Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy lost their opening matches. Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa lost the match to Japanese pair of Ayaka Takahashi and Misaki Matsumoto. The men’s doubles duo of Manu and Sumeeth lost 18-21 13-21 to World no two Indonesian duo Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan.
Some good news came from the tennis court as well , when the Indian pair of f Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna won their opening match and beated Sam Stosur and Jonathan Peers of Australia in straight sets. Next they will face British combination of Andy Murray and Heather Watson for a place in the semi-finals.
The Indian ace Archers Deepika Kumari, Bombayla Devi both lost their respective matches and ended their Rio campaign Deepika was beaten 0-6 by Chinese Taipeir’s Ya-Ting Tan and Bombayla Devi 2-6 by Mexico’s Alejandra Valencia.
And the bad news continued coming when Indian boxer Shiv Thapa lost his match to Cuba’s Robeisy Ramirez in the 56kg competition by 0-3.
