Svetlana Kuznetsova Cuts Own Hair On Court To Win The Match
Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova said she did what she had to do to beat Agnieszka Radwańska in the WTA finals in Singapore. So she gave her hairs. The Russian, 31, who qualified for the event ahead of Britain’s Johanna Konta, cut her thick plait in half with scissors at the start of the third set.
The Russian came back from a match point down to beat Radwanska 5-7 6-1 7-5 in a group match at the season-ending tournament for the eight best female tennis players in the world.
Questions over her haircut opened the post-match press conference, with Kuznetsova explaining that her plait had been bothering her by getting in her eyes.
“Every time I would hit a good shot, it would hit my eye every time and I had [to] struggle,” she said.
“I thought, ‘OK, what’s more important now, my hair, which I can let grow, or the match?’ I thought, ‘OK, I got to go for it right now’, and that’s it. I was not thinking too much, though.
“I was just trying to get the best of me … I don’t even know how much I cut there.”
On the other hand her opponent Agnieszka Radwańska said she was unaware of the incident, but agreed with her opponent’s priorities.
“I didn’t even know that,” said the Pole. “Good thing she didn’t cut her anything else. I think hair is not very important.”
It is not the first time a tennis player has taken action after being distracted by their own locks on court. Britain’s Andy Murray snipped his fringe during his defeat by Rafael Nadal at last season’s ATP Finals.
