Ravi Shastri on July 11 is announced as the new head coach of Indian Cricket Team till ICC World Cup 2019. Born on 27 May, 1962 as Ravishankar Jayadritha Shastri, he is known as the most versatile cricketer in India. He started as a left arm spinner and his hard work made him a successful opening batsman. There are many things about this cricket celebrity nobody knows about. Few of them are:
- He turned to Ravi Shastri from Ravishankar Jayadritha Shastri and more to ‘Shaz’ after he co-starred with Wasim Akram in the TV show ‘The Shaz & Waz Show’.
- Ravi Shastri was a poster boy of Indian cricket during his youth. He was tall and handsome and was a ladies’ man. His romance with actress Amrita Singh gained a lot of publicity.
- He started his career by being number 10 in the batting order. But he gained success by his hard work in less than 2 years and became the opening batsman for the test cricket.
- When he retired, he was just below Sunil Gavaskar for having an average of 44.04 (for 10 innings opening). His record was only broken by Virendra Sehwag.
- Ravi had another sportsperson in his family. It was his cousin, Mridula Shastri who served as a captain of Indian women’s team as a swimmer and water polo player. Mridula died in 1988 in the bombing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie in Scotland.
- As an opener, he created the average of 60.00 in Australia with his double ton at Sydney. In 1985, he made the second faster double ton against Baroda in Ranji Trophy as he smashed Tilak Raj for six sixes. He reached his ton in just 80 balls and later created his next hundred in just 43 deliveries.
- He started a talent management company known as Showdiff Worldwide in collaboration with Rediffusion DY&R in 2003.
- Like Sachin Tendulkar, Ravi Shastri was also named National Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. He was also the celebrity torch bearer in Olympics Torch Relay in Oman in 2008.
- He married Ritu Singh in 1990 and has a daughter, Aleka. She was born in 2008 when Shastri was 46 years old.
- Due to repeatedly getting knee injuries, Ravi was forced to retire at the age of 30.
