The world’s shortest flight, a tiny hop between two remote British islands, celebrated Monday taking its millionth passenger on the route. The flight between Westray and Papa Westray is part of the Orkney Inter-Isles Air Service which connects seven islands and is officially recognised as the world’s shortest flight. Veteran flyer Anne Rendall received a bouquet of flowers on Monday after flying more than 10,000 trips on the service between two of the Orkney Islands, visiting island communities for her job at the Royal Bank of Scotland.
The 2.7km (1.7-mile) flight between Westray and Papa Westray in the Orkney islands, off mainland Scotland’s northeast coast, holds the Guinness World Record as the shortest scheduled service. The flight, in an eight-seater Britten Norman Islander aircraft, officially takes two minutes but with favourable winds it can be done in 47 seconds. Jonathan Hinkles, Loganair’s managing director, said: “The route is a jewel in our network and known across the world.
The airline has operated the 1.7 mile route since 1967, and currently holds the Guinness World Record for the shortest scheduled airline service. Anne Rendall, a Royal Bank of Scotland mobile-banker, has completed more than 10,000 trips on the service. She was presented with the bouquet by Alex Rendall, who is the pilot of the famous route.
It is part of a daily service route that leaves Orkney’s main town, Kirkwall, and stops off around the archipelago. The Royal Bank of Scotland flying banker has flown more than 10,000 trips on the service, visiting island communities.
