One of the key note speakers, Dr. PrasannaChandra, Professor from IIM Bangalore spoke about the corporate objective of increasing the economic value of firms in a legal, ethical way and in the process creating value for the society. Commenting on the Indian business scenario, he said that capital misallocations by corporates have resulted in huge pressure on Indian banks. The key is to finance proactively and not reactively. He presented the value octagon, citing the case of Berkshire Hathaway, for a corporate to be successful. The eight values, that were stressed upon and discussed in detail were -Capital Allocation, Performance Management, Corporate Governance, Corporate Risk Management, Cost Management, Strategic Financing Decisions, Strategic business model, and Mergers, Acquisitions & Restructuring. He concluded by listing the qualities of a corporate leader that one can learn from Mahatma Gandhi, the father of Nation, – Complete identification with the masses, Simplicity, honesty and being a powerful communicator.
The key note address was delivered by Ambi M.G. Parmaeswaran, Brand Strategist, Author and Founder, Brand-Building.com. He spoke about the importance of short cases in Indian Management schools. He illustrated with the example how he started teaching small case from business daily. Cases are important from an industry-academia collaboration perspective and give students a perspective and critical scenario as a part of their learning. It is an important way of opening dialogue between the industry and the B-schools. There are many unique scenarios to Indian Business, which can’t be understood by International cases. Summits such as GSMC 2017 provide the perfect platform to explore, identify and address the issues, which would substantially help FPM scholars in the journey ahead and promote the habit of reading among students.
The valedictory session of two days Summit kicked off by the concluding remarks presented by Prof B.S.Sahay, Director, IIM Raipur. He thanked both the dignitaries for their enriching key notes. Speaking on the case method of teaching, he said, “It’s important to interact with data. We need to focus on primary data so that more justice is done to cases and teaching. We must have our own cases repository.” He emphasized on the inclusion of visuals, and collecting data from the field to learn from the case. He added, “Everybody takes pride in teaching but they must take pride in learning, too.” As per him, new teaching methods must be based on the principle of Class room LAW, which he has described as Listening, Asking and Watching (LAW).
Prof. PRS Sarma, Co-chair GSMC 2017 in his report, he shared the mega success story of GSMC 2017. He laid huge emphasis on the ideology behind this event and how the two day summit was a grand success with presenters all across the country coming up with innovative cases. He quoted Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, “Thinking is progress, not-thinking is the stagnation of the individual, organisations and nation. Thinking leads to action, Knowledge without action is useless and irrelevant. Knowledge with action is converting adversity into prosperity”. He could imagine the three year old GSMC celebrating its 100th anniversary where people from all across the globe would take pride in this summit.
The Summit was concluded by the vote of thanks submitted by Prof. Vinita Sahay, Professor, IIM Raipur and Summit Co-chair. She acknowledged the continuous support from all corners of the world in making the Summit a grand success and congratulated the award winners in various categories and she has also urged the case writers to support the Summit in its future editions with augmented levels of gusto and energy.
