NSUI condemns Smt. Maneka Gandhi’s statement on hostel curfew
In a statement to NDTV during an interview on International Women’s Day, Minister for Women and Child Development, Smt. Maneka Gandhi made some very regressive statements. She said that boys and girls of 16 and 17 are ‘hormonally challenged’ and hostel curfew is like a ‘Lakshman Rekha’ to protect them from the ‘hormonal outburst’. We condemn the statement of Smt. Maneka Gandhi in the strongest possible terms. It is unbecoming of the Women and Child Development Minister to make such a statement. This puts light on the regressive mindset of the Minister influenced by the RSS-BJP ideology who does not believe in the coexistence of sexes. Students shouldn’t be spoken of as savages incapable of controlling themselves. We are a well evolved section of society. We don’t need Government Control in order to conduct ourselves. This is also furthering the mentality of victimizing the victim. Ever since the BJP has come into power in 2014, they have been furthering their agenda which gives more power and control in the hands of the privileged section of society while harassing the underprivileged – Dalit, Minority, Women, Students, LGBT, economically backward, etc. NSUI believes in equality of sexes. On paper hostels have curfew for both men and women but in practice, the curfew is implemented only for women and not for men. Discrimination in hostel curfew timing is regressive and needs to end. We demand Government intervention to ensure that Universities have the same hostel curfew timings for all genders on paper as well as in implementation.
