Rafael Nadal yesterday made to the final of Australian open for a dream final against his long time rival Roger Federer, a match that every tennis fan is waiting for. It is eight years since the Australian Open played host to the most hotly-anticipated match-up in modern tennis history with a major title on the line. Nadal has had the measure of Federer over the course of their 13-year rivalry, leading the series 23-11. So can Roger win this time in Melbourne or Rafa will once again create history.
Roger –Rafa Revelry Is one of the biggest of the game or I should say one of the biggest in the sporting world. Whenever the two have come together there has been a epic match. So here lets take a look to top 5 matches between the two .
5. 2005 Miami; FEDERER D. NADAL, 2–6, 6–7 (4), 7–6 (5), 6–3, 6-1
“It was a very equal match,” an 18-year-old Nadal said after falling prey to a stirring fight back from Federer . Nadal led Federer by two sets and 4–1 in the third before the world No. 1 turned it around. In the process, Federer enhanced his reputation in a new way. “It wasn’t until I showed more grit when the going got tough that they started to respect me,” the Swiss would say years later. That new respect started here.
4. Roland Garros 2011 final: Nadal def Federer 7-5 7-6(3) 5-7 6-1
Before this year, this was the only final in which Nadal and Federer were not seeded Nos. 1 and 2 (Nadal was No. 1, but Federer was No. 3, behind Djokovic). The Swiss had ended Novak Djokovic’s 43-match unbeaten streak in the semifinals and came into his first major since winning the 2010 Australian Open with renewed verve, facing up to the demons of his 6-1 6-3 6-0 demolition at the hands of the defending champion there in 2008. But this time it took one more set for Rafa to take the title by 7-5 7-6(3) 5-7 6-1.
3) 2007 WIMBLEDON; FEDERER D. NADAL, 7–6 (7), 4–6, 7–6 (3), 2–6, 6-2
By Wimbledon 2007, the rivalry had reached peak altitude. Both the players were leader on the their court ,Nadal on clay and Federer on grass. Having powered past Nadal in the 2006 decider, 2007 painted a picture of how quickly Nadal was coming for the big man, even on grass. It two tiebreaks and five sets for Federer to stop the charge from Nadal, but it would prove the last time the old dog would take down the young pup in a major.
2. Australian Open 2009 final: Nadal def Federer 7-5 3-6 7-6(3) 3-6 6-2
Let’s hope that this year final also is as interested as we saw in 2009 when the two greats of the game came together and how can we forget the tears of Roger Federer. “It’s killing me,” Federer said as he accepted the runner-up trophy in a darkened Rod Laver Arena after another five-set loss to Nadal.
Both players made nervy starts on serve before Nadal seized the initiative, and six saved break points in the third set proved crucial – Federer had the game to hit back in the fourth, but Nadal had the stamina to raise his game in the fifth and take the match with 7-5 3-6 7-6(3) 3-6 6-2. “Rafa, congratulations,” Federer added after regaining his composure. “You played incredible. You deserve it, man.”
1 Wimbledon 2008 final: Nadal def Federer 6-4 6-4 6-7(5) 6-7(8) 9-7
Now this is a match every Federer and Nadal fan will remember, a match that not only crated history but gave tennis a new champion. Rarely has a match been as highly anticipated as this final between the world’s No. 1 and No. 2. And never has a match exceeded those expectations as spectacularly. Federer was unbeaten in 41 matches at the All England Club when he faced Nadal in the final for a third straight year, but Nadal had evolved from clay-court specialist to all-court contender as he chased the title that he had dreamed of as a child. Nadal took the first two sets and Federer took the next two in tie breaks before Spaniard won the decider 9-7 after almost five hours, and with this a new era in tennis started.
