S.V Sunil Awarded As Player Of The Year, 2016: Asian Hockey Awards
Indian forward hockey player S V Sunil was named the Asian Player of the year 2016 by Asian Hockey Federation on Thursday. Also, drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh was named the Asian Promising Player of the Year in the continental body’s annual awards.
Sunil played an important role in India’s successful outing at the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Champions Trophy in London where the team won a silver medal. He is considered as one of the fastest player in the game. The India team earned silver medal for the first time. Sunil scored some important goals and made other players for his strikes.
The nominations for the awards were done by coaches of national teams from Asia and the criteria of nomination was based on the performance for the year 2016. “This award is the icing on the cake. I believe Indian Hockey is growing year by year and we have enjoyed some memorable victories in 2016. This award could not have been possible but for our team work,” Sunil said.
Harmanpreet Singh won the award in junior men’s category. He also had a good run, playing an important role in India’s Junior World Cup in Lucknow last year. He was also a part of Rio Olympics and Champions Trophy.
“I am very excited to receive this award. Awards and recognitions are a big motivation for a young player like me to improve on my skills and come up with memorable performances,” Harmanpreet said. “I believe 2016 was a great year for Indian hockey and I would like to thank the AHF for honoring me with this prestigious award and Hockey India fir their ongoing support,” stated Harmanpreet.
