Shah Rukh Khan’s National Award winning performances
Shah Rukh Khan- epitome of romance can undoubtedly be called as the face of Indian cinema. The more said about him, the less it is. From a dreamy eyed Delhi boy with no Godfather in the industry to one of the most influential men across the globe – Shah Rukh Khan’s awe-inspiring journey has set an example for the Indian youth.
His skilled acting over the decades have proved his mettle and made him a star he is today. He is one of the few actors who have garnered critical plus mass acclaim for himself.
The King Khan or Badshah of Bollywood, as he is known today has won several accolades and awards for his performances in various of his films but the actor has never won a National Award.
The immense talent he has should be applauded with an honorary award but the actor still waits for this honor to be received.
No doubt that he would pull it off in near future but here are some of his performances which are worthy of winning a National Award.
. Dil Se…:
One of the most underrated films in Bollwyood, ‘Dil Se…’ proved SRK was not all about the Yash Raj glamour and candy floss romance. ‘Dil Se…’ was dark and gritty, and SRK cast himself in a completely different mould for this one. The film speaks volumes about the sincerity with which it was made. SRK’s performance as Amarkant Verma was sheer brilliance. Sadly, the film never got its due nor SRK. This performance should have won him a National Award but it was Ajay Devgn who won this honorary award for his portrayal of ‘Ajay R. Desai’ in Mahesh Bhatt’s Zakhm. Truly deserving but SRK was no less in this Maniratnam directorial.
. Devdas:
No one else could have played the alcoholic lover better than this man. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s love for detail and Shah Rukh Khan’s heartfelt performance made ‘Devdas’ the iconic film that it is. SRK’s Dev grabs you by your heart till you concede. I find ‘Devdas’ as SRK’s best performance till date. The amount of emotional imbalance and suffering the character goes through was terrifically brought to life by him. This performance for me should have definitely been honored by a National Award but yet again Ajay Devgn as Bhagat Singh took the glory for the second time.
. Kal Ho Naa Ho:
‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ is one of the classiest love stories of Indian cinema. Shah Rukh had been part of romantic films earlier but this one was different. SRK as Aman made us laugh, he made us cry. He taught us how to live a happy life. “Jhoomo Gao Muskurao, Kya Pata Kal Ho Naa Ho”. With ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’, he literally mastered the art of comedy and took entertainment to a whole new level and at the same time made us cry too. His comic timing was simply impeccable in the film. And not to forget those tear-jerking moments towards the end. SRK is one man who can make you laugh and cry at the same time. SRK as Aman should have received a National Award but this time it was Tamil superstar Vikram who received the honorary award for ‘Pithamagan’.
. Swades and Veer-Zaara:
‘Swades’ is SRK’s most underrated role. One of the most revolutionary films of all times, ‘Swades’ had SRK five up his superstardom and step into the shoes of a common man. The sincerity in his eyes was enough to have us know the emotions were coming straight through his heart.
As squadron leader ‘Veer Pratap Singh’ ‘Veer Zaara’ showed ‘Shah Rukh Khan’ as a brooding lover in an unforgettable performance. He captured the old world charm of romance so brilliantly well, the film transported the audiences to a different time altogether. With due credit to the director and the dialogue writers, SRK owned ‘Veer Zaara’, one of the most epic Bollywood romances ever.
2004 for me is SRK’s best year and with performances like ‘Swades’ and ‘Veer-Zaara’ and a blockbuster ‘Main Hoon Naa’ he truly deserved a National Award but this time another ‘Khan’ took the glory. Saif Ali Khan won the National Award for the best actor as ‘Karan Kapoor’ in ‘Hum Tum’.
. Paheli:
This is amongst SRK’s most accomplished performances ever. He is fabulous as the ghost and equally convincing as the bewildered husband. Paheli is one of the finest films produced in the modern times and Shah Rukh molded himself in altogether different avtar and Paheli became one of his finest works till date. Though this time, it was none other than star of the millennium Shree Amitabh Bachchan who took the glory for his role in Black.
. Chak De India:
Chak De India’s Kabir Khan is one of the most refreshing roles of SRK. Undoubtedly one of the best performance of his entire career, Shah Rukh Khan showed an entirely new, authoritative side to his otherwise happy, charming personality in ‘Chak De India’. He was controlled, affirmative and powerful. The famous ‘sattar minute’ dialogue is one of the most inspiring scenes in Bollywood films! If I was among the one’s giving National Award I would have given it to Shah Rukh for just this speech.
But this time it was Prakash Raj’s role in Tamil film ‘Kanchivaram’ which captivated the jury to honor him with this prestigious award.
. My Name Is Khan:
Shah Rukh Khan as a man suffering with Asperger Syndrome was so unbelievably nuanced; it proved his calibre as an actor like never before. He set the standard so high; it was unthinkable to imagine someone else playing even a remotely similar role. He lent immense gravitas to the character who tugs at the heartstrings without evoking pity or sympathy. The assiduity, warmth and kindness Rizwan Khan reverberate throughout the movie illuminating it with resounding radiance. Undoubtedly his one of the best till date but this too couldn’t fetch him the prestigious award. It was Salim Kumar who won it for Malyalam film ‘Adaminte Makan Abu’.
