Apple developing Micro LED panels for next Apple Watch
Apple is going in for a Micro LED display for its next Apple Watch model according to Taiwanese supply chain makers. The new displays will be mass produced for the first time ever, since no other manufacturer has jumped on to the technology yet. Apple acquired LuxView Technology in 2014 which may be the company that will take things forward for the tech behemoth. Apple had also set up a laboratory in northern Taiwan for R&D back in 2015 so there is a big chance that Apple will be going all in for this technology while being the first to pull off the same.
Micro LED displays are also thinner as they do not require a backlight that often makes LCDs thicker. So this makes them perfect for wearables like smartwatches. The same source also reports that Micro LED displays cost a lot more than OLED displays when it comes to production which may be a reason why Apple plans to use them on devices with a smaller display first. The first and only Apple Watch models in existence currently use a flexible OLED display.
