Nawazuddin Siddique’s Struggle from ‘Watchman’ to a ‘Super Star’
He is regarded as one of the best actor in the film industry now, from Gangs of Wasseypur to Badlapur every single role that he performed is just amazing. But the fame that he is witnessing now has come to him after long years of struggle so today on his 43th birthday here we are looking to the story of star actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
FROM A SMALL TOWN
Nawaz belongs to very small district of Budhana, Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. Is father was a farmer and he is the eldest of his eight siblings. And he describes his town as where there is nothing much to do and not any scope for education. And there are no theater is his town.
WORKED AS A WATCHMAN, CHEMIST
Just after completing his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya, Haridwar for the leaving he took up jobs like of a chief chemist in Baroda. As his interest in theater came he soon joined a group in Delhi but because of financial disturbance he took job of a watchman.
FIRST FILM APPEARANCE ‘SARFAROSH’
After graduating from NSD in 1996 and working in Delhi for four years, he came to Mumbai in search of work after the capital disillusioned him. Siddiqui’s first film appearance was in the gritty 1999 cop-drama, Sarfarosh, He got paid a paltry sum of Rs. 500 for a day’s job. But his role was not well appeared.
TURNING POINT ‘BLACK FRIDAY’
The turning point in Siddiqui’s life came when he was offered a pulpy role in Anurag Kashyap’s Black Friday, a film that was going to change his life rather dramatically. As fate would have it, the film got banned for two years because the judgement of the trial it tackled as its primary subject had not been passed. After the film finally released, Kashyap and Siddiqui won praise for their respective contributions, and this lead to the actor being offered better roles.
PRASHANT BHARGAVA’S ‘PATANG’
For the next few years, Siddiqui mostly worked in indie films. His first lead role in a feature film was as the wedding singer Chakku in Prashant Bhargava’s Patang, which premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and Tribeca Film Festival, for which Nawazuddin’s natural performance has been praised by world-renowned film critic Roger Ebert a role which ‘transformed his acting style.
A STAR IS BORN
He became a household name post Kahaani (2012), where he played the archetypal short-tempered intelligence officer Khan. Anurag Kashyap’s gangster epic Gangs of Wasseypur followed which furthered his fame. He played his first primary role as Sonu Duggal in Ashim Ahluwalia’s Miss Lovely which premiered at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, a role Nawazuddin describes as his “most real performance so far
His journey is just like a roller coaster ride. And how far Siddiqui has come, from a guy who was paid a miserable amount for a penny-ante role to being a parallel lead in a film with one of the industry’s most beloved icons.
