Snooty The Oldest Manatee Enters Guinness World Records 2017
Born in July 21 1948, Snooty is currently 67 years old and has entered Guinness World Records 2017 Edition as the world’s oldest manatee in captivity. He lives at the South Florida Museum in Bradenton, Florida, USA. He was brought here in 1949 when he was just 11-months old.
Snooty lives in a 230,000-litre pool with the other two manatees. Manatees are fully aquatic herbivorous marine mammals also sometimes known as sea cows. They weigh as much as 590 kilograms. Manatees usually die before they reach at the age of 10. According to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conversation Commission, which observes manatee populations, the oldest wild manatee in Florida was 59 years old with the next oldest 48 years of age.
Taking proper care of manatees and paying attention to their habitats they can live very long like snooty. They are hearty animals overall. A caretaker of Snooty, at the South Florida Museum once said, “one of the fabulous things Snooty’s done for us is been an ambassador for endangered species and in particular Manatees.” Snooty has become friendly over the years and bonded well with visitors and staff at the South Florida Museum. “He is definitely more interested in people than other manatees. He doesn’t really seem to form bonds with other manatees, but doesn’t seem to mind them. He really likes people.” Says communications manager Jessica Schubick.
When snooty turned 67 in July 2015 his fans from all over the world send him birthday cards and congratulated the popular marine mammal for the longer life.
