Talk on Safety at IIM Indore
The Industry Interface Office (IIO) of IIM Indore is working towards the goal of educating and empowering Industry personnel through knowledge. In this pursuit to enhance the Industry Academia partnership, IIM Indore had launched ‘Expert Talk Series’ a couple of months ago. On July 23, 2016, IIO of IIM Indore has arranged a talk by Shri Shyam Sundar, President, Inox Works and Consultants Pvt. Ltd.
Mr. Shyam Sundar will be delivering a guest lecture on the topic ‘Safety Beyond PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)’. The objective of this talk is to bring a mindset shift from the way we relate safety to physical objects to a paradigm where safety is practiced in world class organizations.
Mr. Shyam Sundar is an Electrical Engineer and has worked for almost 32 years in various functions and levels at TATA Steel. He has vast expertise in areas such as Safety& Health, Manufacturing , Automation ,Engineering and Projects. He has won the MD’s award for TOP – a programme for Operation Excellence and Safety in collaboration with McKinsey&Co. He has been member of the executive committee of Special Task Group on Safety & Health in the Eastern Region of CII, Safety Steering Committee of the Tata group and task group under the Directorate of Industrial Safety & Health, Jharkhand.
The talk would emphasize on the fact that most lives are lost due to incidents than due to communicable diseases, regardless of the point that all injuries and occupational illnesses are absolutely preventable. As a matter of fact, since industrialization in the 19th century, several lives have been lost due to disastrous occurrences which are utterly manmade. This is because safety has been primarily understood to a level where the PPEs seem to be an impenetrable barrier to risks and any measure beyond this is presumptive. Innately, this has also translated into a compliance mindset throughout the industry. Safety is well beyond PPE and compliance. In fact PPE is the last protective barrier after all systems have failed in the line of attack of the hazard.
Mr. Sundar would discuss about safety fundamentals and building and internalizing it as a personal value leading to strong organizational values. He would also be discussing about various set of principles that require resources in the form of leadership, passion, energy and a relentless commitment to zero far from the cost world we are used to.
