Movie Review: Captain cool strikes a helicopter shot at the Box office
MS Dhoni the heartthrob of millions of people across the globe is now set to share elements of the untold life on silver screens. M.S.Dhoni — The Untold Story will not only cover the remarkable rise of the World Cup-winning captain, but will also reveal the exciting facts of Dhoni’s personal life and journey, before he became a global sporting icon. It is about how the death of his first love, brings a tragic episode in the Indian cricket hero’s life to movie screens. Neeraj Pandey, includes scenes from Dhoni’s childhood when football was his passion as well as his years as a young ticket collector. It culminates with his heroics at the 2011 final.
Back in the year 2002, when Dhoni was in his early 20s, vying for a place in the India team, he reportedly fell in love with a girl named Priyanka Jha. He had made up his mind to spend the rest of his life with her. It was then that the wicket-keeper batsman was picked for the India A squad to tour Zimbabwe and Kenya in 2003-2004. In the tri-nation tournament with Kenya and Pakistan, he helped India A chase down 223 against their arch-rivals with a half-century, following up with consecutive centuries, scoring 362 runs in six innings. But in between all these, Dhoni reportedly suffered a major setback as Priyanka was tragically killed in an accident. The diminutive skipper after returning from the overseas tour spent a whole year struggling to come to terms with the sudden demise of his lady love. Dhoni, just like he has showcased grit and determination on the green turf time and again, did an encore off it to claw his way back to normal life and tour Bangladesh with a star-studded Indian outfit. Post that, everything is history as Dhoni rose through the ranks and finally became the skipper of the Men in Blue. But even after his marriage with Sakshi Singh Rawat, on July 4, 2010, Dhoni reportedly could never forget Priyanka. The story reveals many other interesting facts about his unknown life to stardom.
It’s a known fact that nothing sells more than cricket and Bollywood in India. By that logic, the music of MS Dhoni’s eagerly awaited biopic MS Dhoni: The Untold Story has to meet sky high expectations, while doing some storytelling of its own. Armaan Mallik’s compositions have a few long lasting melodies, but nothing that really stands out as a true MS Dhoni number.
Besabriyaan, sung by Armaan Malik and written by Manoj Muntashir touches upon his desire to break free from the yoke of everyday life and do something challenging.
Kaun tujhe sung by Palak Muchhal, has minimal orchestration. That’s where the heroine bares her feelings for the hero and Palak has caught those nuances expertly.
Jab tak sung by Armaan provide the hero’s answer to the query and cement of his love. This is the male versions of Kaun Tujhe. The songs have a country vibe to them, the emphasis being more on the vocals while the music ebbs and flows around them. Armaan has sung like a person actually in love. The tune is unconventional but somehow the singer-composer stands a high risk of sounding the same in all his songs.
Parwah nahi has a rock rebel sound and likewise, illustrates that frame of mind of the hero where he’s feeling like a rebel. He wants to hit out his detractors and shut them once for all, like Dhoni did with his trademark helicopter shots. You’ll see Sushant Singh Rajput training hard in and gearing up to transform into the reel MS Dhoni. Siddharth Basrur hits the notes perfectly and this rock anthem will surely please you. It showcases Amaal’s versatility as a composer as well.
Arijit Singh weaves his magic again with Phir Kabhi at the risk of sounding the same as every other song he has sung. A hummable tune and good lyrics, but some versatility could have done wonders.
The last song of the album is the fun and frothy Padhoge likhoge sung by Ananya Nanda and Adithyan A Prithviraj. Its lyrics bring home the point that sports are important too but in a non-preachy way that will appeal to children and adults alike.
MS Dhoni is an impressive album which stays perfectly true to the film’s genre.
The biopic will certainly be an inspiration to those who dare to dream and then go all out to achieve their dreams. This is sure to strike a helicopter shot among people.
