Musical Arijit grows an year older
The man with a voice that drives the nation crazy, Arijit Singh has become an year older today. We wish him all the love and success at his special day.
Arijit Singh has now become a household name, as practically every movie released these days has a hit song of his.
At 29, Arijit Singh is already considered the voice of his generation. But despite his ability to reach the loftiest of notes, the singer-music programmer has his feet planted firmly, shyly, on the ground. Arijit Singh detests media interview. He isn’t social.
“I hate being a celebrity,” says Singh. The man with a magical voice, as he is considered now days, was born in Jiaganj, Murshidabad, West Bengal.
He began his career by participating in a reality show Fame Gurukul in which he stood at 6th position. After winning another reality show “10 ke 10 Le Gaye Dil”, Arijit Singh built his own recording setup and started as a music programmer after which he went to become as an assistant music programmer to Pritam, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Vishal-Shekhar and Mithoon.
“I came into music because I loved it, not because I wanted to be famous. My singing career happened by fluke”, said Arijit.
In fact, when, as an 18-year-old, Singh lined up for the auditions of Fame Gurukul in 2005, it was not because he wanted to be a part of the Bollywood music industry. “It was to check where I stood. Unless you compete, you won’t know,” he says.
Arijit Singh wasn’t even aware when ‘Phir Mohabbat’ (Murder 2), his first Bollywood song, got released in 2011. “I’d sung it in 2009 and had forgotten about it. It was only when a friend of mine told me that I knew it had released. Even after it became a hit, my desire for playback didn’t grow, I was too busy programming music,” he says.
At the time when almost every television channel had one reality, Fame Gurukul had singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan in the jury which helped Arijit make up his mind. “He was the only reason why I joined that show. He has a classical background and astounding versatility,” says Singh. “Shankarji and I have shared a unique relationship. He has helped me in the years after Fame Gurukul and continues to guide me even now. I have turned to him whenever I have been in financial trouble and he has given me work.”
“There are certain people whom you meet and they stay in your mind forever. You know that person has genuine talent and has to come up in life some time or the other. Arijit is that kind of a person,” says Mahadevan.
Arijit Singh’s first notable achievement was when he fetched the Mirchi Music Award for Upcoming Male Playback Singer for the song “Duaa” from the 2012 released movie Shanghai. He was also nominated in the same category for another of his song “Phir Le Aya Dil” from the movie Barfi.
His most remarkable achievement came in 2013 with the song “Tum Hi Ho” from the movie “Aashiqui 2”. This song gave him instant stardom and he became a household name. He won many awards for this song including his first Filmfare award. He followed it up with hits in moives like “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani” and “Two States”. Today Arjit Singh is the busiest singer in the industry and is continuing to deliver one hit after another.
Being extremely talented and a trained classical singer, Arjit Singh can sing even the most difficult songs flawlessly. At just a young age of 29, Arijit Singh is already at the peak of his career. Most interestingly he has already made it to the Forbes’s magazine top 100 celebrity list. The magazine reports that the singer made 350 million rupees in 2014.
Arijit Singh has many admirers in the industry today, which includes his juniors as well as seniors. Some even go the extent of calling him the King of Romance. Whatever it might be, But what really admirable is the humbleness of this small town boy who managed to make it big in Bollywood. Fame and money has not changed him a bit. We sincerely hope that he remains this way all his life, and continue to charm us with his magical voice.
