Chetan Bhagat, a non English and youth icon writer, wrote a novel in October 2014 titled ‘half girlfriend’. Later, now in 2017, a movie based on that novel starring Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor is going to be released. Many people have different thoughts about this term.  “Dude” comments can be seen according to the mentality of the people. But does anyone actually know what this term means?

First of all, half girlfriend isn’t an actual term. It’s grammatically incorrect. It’s been created by Chetan Bhagat and according to him, “Half-Girlfriend, to me, is a unique Indian phenomenon, where boys and girls are not clear about their relationship status with each other. A boy may think he is more than friends with the girl, but the girl is still not his girlfriend. Hence, I thought we needed a term like ‘Half girlfriend’. Because, in India, that is what most men get.”

An image is been created in the mind of people that women are tend to ignore being in a relationship. They find it easy to stay at a compromising level believing in ‘just friends’. Men wanting a relationship, but women keeping it complicated. The term half girlfriend is given a name just few years back, but this has been a relationship trend from all the times. Where man loves the women, but the girl is “a half girlfriend” as for her, he’s just a friend.

Another meaning to the term can be an ‘Imaginary Girlfriend’. You ask your college friend for a hangout, or for a movie date, making a move. She even says yes but you’re still ‘Friends’.

This has created a buzz on social media as well. You must have seen the tolls on Instagram and Facebook coming up with a term ‘Friend Zoned’. Friend zoned is a type of relationship in between men and women, where the guy tries to connect with the women, but gets into the list of her friend, hence, friend zoned. Friend zone is just a level below the term half girlfriend. As the cover of movie ‘half girlfriend’ states “dost se zyada, par girlfriend se kam”

Women are considered as the most complicated creature on the planet. It’s said “nobody can understand a women”. Thus the term depicts the level of unknowingness in a women’s mind where she isn’t sure about what kind of relationship she is in. A man keeps on running after the women, but she believes to keep it at a complicated level where they are more than friends but less than a couple.
