Bangkok, in Thai called ‘Krung Thep Maha Nakhon’ is the capital and chief port of Thailand. Considered as the only metropolitan city in the country, there are small towns and villages being Thailand’s cultural and commercial centre.
Bangkok city was founded in 1782 by King Buddha Yodfa or Rama I who established the Chakri Dynasty. The name Bangkok was given by the foreigners before the city got build – the village or district (bang) of wild plums (makok). The people there call it ‘Krung Thep’, abbreviation often translated as ‘City Of Angels’. The original name of the Bangkok has 169 characters; it is Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahinthara Yutthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udom Ratchaniwet Mahasathan Amonphiman Awatansathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukamprasit. This roughly translates to: “City of angels, great city of immortals, magnificent city of the nine gems, seat of the king, city of royal palaces, home of gods incarnate, erected by Visvakarman at Indra’s behest”. This name was given by King Rama I.
Later King Rama I commanded the construction of the Grand Palace with a royal temple, the Emerald Buddha Temple. This is today Bangkok’s biggest tourist attraction and pilgrimage destination for devout Buddhist and nationalist. It is spread in 94.5 hectare with more than 100 buildings that represent 200 years of royal history and architectural experimentation.
Later during King Rama IV, the capital went for some developments as he ordered road building, canal digging, ship building and reorganization of Thai army and administration.
The biggest change was brought up by King Rama V because he came up with modernization. He introduced education, administration, justice, communication and public health in the nation. The county was then divided into monthon (administrative subdivisions) and Bangkok was one of them.
